DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Ganz klar: Laugenbroetchen. What sells here as Pretzel is awful.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
Oh Boy - there are lots: Beratungsresistenz, Minuswachstum, Fahrvergnuegen, Zeitgeist, Willkuer, Geistesblitz... I am also a big fan of: "Lebensgefaehrte/in" - the word does not exist in English. 'Boyfriend' sounds like pre-school, 'Partner' makes you sound gay, 'Fiancee' isn't it because you are not planning to get married. It may be a German thing.

DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
I miss writing in German. I used to write a lot, working as a press secretary for environmental groups and as a district manager for the Green Party. When I moved to NYC, one of the toughest challenges was to adjust to American business writing.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I am the Director of Deutsches Haus and a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University , down in Greenwich Village. Have you ever been to the beautiful Washington Mews? You should! And here is why: it will remind you of Europe and you will simply love it. Other than that, I should mention that Deutsches Haus is, at least in my humble, yet expressive view, the leading cultural and language institution for everything and anything German-speaking in this great city. In short: we are a center that does not simply promote German speaking culture abroad but more importantly encourages interaction and integration between the German/European and the American cultural tradition in the past, present and future. In this, we are combining a high-standard language instruction component with an unrivaled cultural program has been and remains our key for success in our overall programming. Furthermore, as an American non-profit, we are an integral part of one of the largest and most prestigious private institutions of higher education in the United States of America, NYU. You should really stop by, enjoy and then support our efforts www.nyu.edu/deutscheshaus.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Many of us don't admit to it but when alone and amongst ourselves, we tend to complain about the inefficiency and inability to produce clean laundry of American washing machines. Deep down inside, the majority of Germans in the US dream of a Miele in stainless steel. And then of course the varieties of bread, and perhaps the accessibility of decent world news on TV...
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
I could not decide on one word and will therefore have to give you this list: Freikoerperkultur, Goetterdaemmerung, Anstandsstueck, Kniekehle, Weltbuerger, and Gesamtkunstwerk (they all sound great and have no equivalent in English). All of them bear deep and complex concepts as well :)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
Eating out. Going out. Stepping out. I love all the neighborhood eateries in Brooklyn. There is always a new place to discover. Fort Greene has become such a vibrant hot spot for food. Love it.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
Over a quarter century! I can't believe it! Came to the US in 1980 on a Fulbright and studied in New Orleans. Fell in love with a guy from Brooklyn, fell in love with his home city even more.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I've met my Jazz teacher here in New York, the Brooklyn pianist Charles Sibirsky. For the past 20 years, apart from raising a family, I've studied Jazz and performed in various settings. I especially love the programs I put together for public libraries: "Shakespeare and all that Jazz", "Here's to the Ladies Who Scat", and "Bop Goes the Weasel", Jazz for Kids. However, I've started to show my roots with my musical activities: My mother who lives back in Baden-Baden, gave me her beautiful, hand-crafted street organ, Scharmanka. Back home, it was easy for me to sing along with her the old Moritaten, hoary ballads of broken hearts and bloody murder.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
If there's one thing I really miss, it's Schwarzwald Schinken, the aged, smoked ham from the Black Forest that's been hanging from some smoky rafters for a long time and has been growing tiny salt crystals on the outside rind (not that stuff that comes in plastic shrinkwrap). I've been happy about the proliferation of micro-breweries and support the local beer brewers. But I still miss the local wines from the Ortenau. I was so thrilled at the German House reception, when I discovered their bottles of Affentaler wines.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
Schadenfreude! Not that I'd indulge in it a lot. But it does come in handy at times.

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
My Highlight of the Week was catching up with a friend for dinner this weekend after returning from my trip to Shanghai. We had a lovely meal and glass of red at a cozy neighborhood restaurant in Brooklyn - The Farm on Adderly - that has been receiving rave reviews.
WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE ACTIVITY IN NEW YORK?
My favorite activity in New York is rock climbing! I've been climbing in New Paltz, just north of the city all summer long, but now that it's colder, I climb at the local city walls to keep my finger muscles in tact.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NEW YORK?
I'm a native New Yorker, but I moved away for university and graduate school. I lived in Freiburg for 18 months in 2003-04, where I undertook research in Phenomenology and Hermeneutics (Husserl and Heidegger) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg with the Fulbright Student Scholar Program. My fondest memory about Germany is my hiking trip in the Schwarzwald (black forest) to Heidegger's hut in Todtnauberg, where I visited the birthplace of his magnum opus, "Sein und Zeit" (engl: Being and Time).
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I just moved back to New York a little over a year ago after finishing my M.Phil in Philosophy in London to pursue a career in marketing at The New York Institute of Photography.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
I miss speaking German and living in a WG with my fellow German students the most. My favorite memory of Germany is having a big German breakfast, complete with Brötchen (rolls), Wurst (cold cuts), and Müsli (cereal), with my flatmates on weekends and catching up.

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
Good question, I have so many highlights that I can't say which one is the most important. Working on new projects in the company, the private time with my husband, the work on new collages or mosaics in my free time on the weekend in Cape May, being at the ocean together with family and friends, the walk on the beach and sitting in the sun at the ocean.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
I don't have one favorite activity, I like meeting friends, theater, movie, culture, private parties with dancing, walking Bobby, my Jack Russell Terrier in Central Park and enjoying the sun together with my husband Nikolaus, sitting on a bench and having a cup of coffee
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
Since 2000, before I traveled back and forth between Hamburg and New York for 6 years
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I'm the President of German Health Plans Worldwide Inc. We are specialists for Health Insurance for Germans in the USA and Worldwide including companies, Universities etc.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
That is not so easy to say. The beautiful "Delikatessengeschäfte" very clean with delicious German food. I love Heringe or all the different variations of "geräucherten Fisch". The understanding of humor, it is not always easy to understand the American humor. Germany is still my country; I understand the Germans and I love how they are. I miss my family and friends.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
"Liebe". Saying I love you in the USA is not the same. You hear the word everywhere. You would never use "Liebe" in the same way. For my opinion the word love has nothing to do with "Liebe".

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
Yesterday I picked up hundreds of original pieces of art from a house Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate recently sold. The artist, who had been married to an Austrian lady, had passed away and his children didn’t care for the art. His art, including many erotic pieces, is actually quite good. We are now selling the art for $10 a piece for a good cause (half goes to Fields for Kids – to build soccer field, the other half to Rotary International). Anyone interested in acquiring some of the art, which would look great in any apartment or house, should contact me at jhess@houlihanlawrence.com.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
Whenever I am in the City, a shopping spree at Zabar’s, the gourmet epicurean emporium on Broadway and 80th Street, is probably my favorite activity.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
I lived in Manhattan for 14 years. Now, for the last
two years I have been living in Larchmont, Westchester
County and I’m loving it!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I am a real estate agent with Houlihan Lawrence, the leading real estate agency in Westchester County, and am specializing on serving European clients that are
interested in renting, buying or selling real estate in Westchester – my office is located basically next to the French-American School and the German School in White Plains is minutes away.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
I am from Freiburg, the "green city." I miss hiking in the Black Forest, visiting the farmers’ market around the Muenster cathedral) in the city, and the Baechle, the rivulets that for centuries have flown through the streets of the Old Town.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
With the election and caucuses coming up in the U.S., the word "Wahlkampfkostenerstattung" (the German government’s re-payment of election campaign expenses) comes to mind.

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
I hope for a new highlight every week! In a city like New York, that is very much possible. A new restaurant, a new acquaintance from somewhere in the world or just time on a bench watching people passing by.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
Running in Central Park! You circle the whole park and see so much. Was I surprised when I first saw race cyclists there. It looks like everybody is doing some sports in Central Park. It seems to be more of a sports field than a park. And then, in the summer it is full of cultural events, too: Concerts and my beloved Shakespeare In the Park.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
For almost eight years, now. In 2000, I arrived with my bags and the papers for the Green Card in my hands. I won it in the Green Card lottery! Actually, I live in Jersey City but spend most of my time in New York City. If you live close to the PATH train, you will be faster in some parts of Manhattan then people of the other boroughs. Jersey City is like a sixth borough. It is a real secret tip for anybody apartment or house hunting.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
A few years ago, I had discovered that Americans don’t have "Hörspiele" for their kids. I thought that that is plain silly and wrong. So I figured that I would do it myself. I founded Giddio and created Billy Brown. Billy Brown is a big, talking, friendly bear, comparable to Benjamin Blümchen. So far, we have produced three audio adventures with him and his best friend Emma. His signature sound is "roooarBingo!" The first adventure "Billy Brown And The Mystery Package" is available as a free download.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Of course, I miss family and friends. But what I miss, too, are the long days in the summer, sitting with friends in beer gardens or street cafes. Plus, I don’t mind the New York pace regarding work and even like the pace on the sidewalks. But in Germany I really enjoy the time people take when they are out with friends, just chilling. The American may know better how to make a living but the Europeans probably know better how to live.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
Certainly "Biergarten" is a great word! Professionally I discovered that "Hörspiel" is a much better word than anything the Americans have. They used to call it radio drama but neither are the productions always dramas nor are they made for radio these days. Now, they call it audio theater, audio drama, audio play, full-cast audio or audio adventures. So far, they couldn’t even settle on just one, which is quite a hurdle for marketing. Producing Billy Brown for kids, I have decided on audio adventures. It simply sounds more exciting: Audio adventures for kids! But a single word like Hörspiel, movie, theater or book instead of a combination of two is simply better; it conveys its own form of art. And I have to admit that I feel somehow proud whenever I see a sophisticated German word like "Leitkultur", "Zeitgeist" or "Realpolitik" in an article.

Antje Hubner
PUBLIC RELATIONS FOR THE ARTS
WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
You can never have only one highlight per week in New York City, that’s why it is New York City and the reason for me living here. Every week is different and can have many facets and multiple highlights, such as a jazz gig in a club around the corner, a Met performance, an Ethan Coen play, an opening at a Chelsea gallery, a movie at a Film Festival, restaurant visits, a potluck party with friends, meeting international people, discovering new neighborhoods, the view of the skyline, a stroll through Central Park, along the Hudson River or to the little red lighthouse, sailing in the NY harbor, bowling in Harlem, watching an American football game, a currywurst at Wechsler’s, running into a Hollywood hero…the list is long.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
On a rare day off I like to let myself drift through the city. It is great to leave the house with no plans at all and see where you end up going and what you end up doing. It’s fun to watch people and there is always something new that can be discovered on a stroll through a neighborhood in New York.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
I have been living here for more than 10 years.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I have founded my own company, called hubtone PR, and we focus mainly on public relations for the arts. We work on long-or short-term projects with both organizations and individuals. Our goal is to support those who enrich our lives with music, opera, drama, painting, photography and filmmaking—in short, the performing or visual arts. We work closely with our clients to determine unique selling points, strategies and action plans and help building a positive relationship with the media and the target audience. Establishing positive awareness, recognition and credibility ultimately helps arts organizations, arts events, artists and creators to support and grow their businesses. I am very lucky that I love what I do! www.hubtonepr.com
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Family and friends, a Westfälische Wurst, a pot of Ostfriesentee with Sahne & Kluntjes on a Stövchen at Cafe Lühmann in Blankenese, the North Sea, a frischgezapftes German beer, a cup of Glühwein to hold on to in winter, the city of Hamburg, German Gemütlichkeit, an environmental awareness, German engineering and craftsmanship (which might have a positive impact on insulation of buildings, a stable power supply system, reliability of the subway, less noisy garbage trucks or cleaner laundry).

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
This week's highlight is definitely my mom's visit. She will bring along a one-year supply of chocolate (I'm sure) and the strongest German coffee she can find to keep her daughter perked up.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY IN NEW YORK?
Picking just one is impossible! I love running over the Brooklyn Bridge with my boot campers right at sunrise or sunset and seeing the skyline in the background. I enjoy going out for brunch on a quiet Sunday morning, enjoying the paper and a cup of coffee. Seeing a Broadway show, seeing the city from above, such as the Empire State Building. Strolling around the Village, people watch, and discovering new restaurants and stores.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
I've been living in NYC for 6 years and lived in Washington DC and CT before.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I quit my full-time career in market research last year to pursue my passion for health and fitness. I'm a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist and work with private clients who want to get fit and healthy. I also founded the Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp a few months ago, which is a high-intensity interval workout that takes participants over the Brooklyn Bridge. Picture sweaty people lunging and doing push-ups in front of a spectacular skyline. I also teach workshops in the NYC area that focus on nutrition, fitness, smoking cessation, and weight loss.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
I've been here for so long that there's little I miss, other than the beautiful Bavarian countryside, the lakes, the mountains.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
Used to be people-watching, but now I prefer an evening stroll on 5th Avenue when things have slowed down and there are fewer people around while the buildings sparkle. I also like to be in Battery Park and look at New York Harbor, or how about the Fulton Ferry in the evening with that great view of Downtown New York..
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
Since 1993, but that is already the second time around. Early seventies I spent a couple of difficult years in Brooklyn.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I do "destination New York services" which means showing New York off to visitors, mostly from Germany, city sightseeing, meet-and-greet at the airports, shopping trips, restaurant reservations or recommendations, things like that. I have a City Tour Guide license. But my favorite visitors are my German couples coming to New York to get married. Did you know Manhattan has the lowest divorce rate of the 5 borroughs? Is that a good omen or what! So I book limos, fotographers, an officiant if needed, I buy the bridal bouquet. And I make sure all the paper work is in order. I am a grandmother by proxy many times over.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Really just my family and friends.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
Going on 16 years, with a few years of commuting being Berlin and New York leading up to moving here...
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? I am a visual artist and singer working with twisted dark German folklore themes. My CD "schamlos schön" of old German folk songs, featuring amazing New York musicians, was just released last fall and I am looking forward to performing the program both in New York and Germany this summer - including opening for Iggy Pop in September at the Ruhrtriennale!

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
I'm really excited to be trying out for a spot on one of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby teams this week. There are currently four teams in New York (Manhattan Mayhem, Queens of Pain, Brooklyn Bombshells, and Bronx Gridlock), and I really hope that the competition won’t be too strong at the try-outs. It’s great to see that the Gotham Girls and other teams around the country are bringing back this fun sport that’s been waiting to make a comeback since its decline in the early 70s. If you’ve never been to a bout, I’d highly recommend it www.gothamgirlsrollerderby.com
WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE ACTIVITY IN NEW YORK?
I'm a huge music fan, and this year has been a great one for concerts. My new favorite venue is the Music Hall of Williamsburg where I recently saw Shout Out Louds from Sweden.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
I arrived here in ’93 with the plan of staying for a year. Fourteen years later I’m still here. Someone once told me that after living in New York for 10 years, you are "allowed" to call yourself a New Yorker. My friend recently referred to me as a Germarican.

WHAT'S UP THIS WEEK?
In October I debuted a new solo work at the Zipper Factory Theater called Little Death: Songs of Coming and Going. Centered around the themes of sex and death and la petite mort, it brings all my musical influences together for the first time – classical, cabaret, Delta blues, jazz, even Portuguese Fado. Its success both with audiences and critics exceeded my fondest dreams for it. Stephen Holden wrote a fabulous review in the New York Times which was especially thrilling. This week I am editing many hours of video footage with which to market the show worldwide, and to put up on YouTube. I will also use the footage to attract investors to help us bring the show back this year for an extended run. So if any of your readers want to invest in a successful Off-Broadway show, they can find me through my website at www.karenkohler.com.
WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
I will be attending the Nightlife Awards on Monday night. I received this award in 2006 for founding and leading the Kabarett Kollektif, my ensemble of European-born cabaretists now based in NYC. Ute Lemper presented the award to us that night. On Sunday, I fly to Frankfurt (my birthplace) to spend time with my family there. I’m mostly in Berlin when I’m in Germany, so it will be nice to reconnect with my city on the Main.
WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE ACTIVITY IN NEW YORK?
I love to ride the Staten Island Ferry just for fun, then pick a borough and explore an unknown neighborhood – its food and its street artists.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?
I’ve been living in NYC since 2000. But I grew up in New York…Long Island to be exact. My father worked for Lufthansa so my family was constantly traveling between Germany and the US while I was growing up which is how I managed to keep my language alive. When I was 5 he was transferred to JFK and when I was 21 he was transferred again to DFW. After he returned to Germany to help build Munich’s airport, I stayed in Texas (for 15 years altogether). I fell in love with Austin and that is where, unbelievably, I first began singing German cabaret.
Though I’ve been singing since childhood, I never aspired to being an entertainer. In fact, I dreamt of becoming the cultural attaché at the German Embassy in Washington as a high-schooler, but then life took me in other directions. It was while managing the headquarters of Whole Foods Market in Austin and singing cabaret and jazz on the side that I decided to trade in the safety of my salary and stock options for the chancy life of a singer, move back to the Big Apple and really advance my music career. Many concert trips later, successes and awards, and I am content with the life of freedom and art-making that I enjoy. When I arrived at the German Embassy in Washington for my first concert in 2000, I was met by the cultural attaché and was able to tell him my story of once dreaming of being a diplomat and having his job. He smiled and introduced me to the audience that night as “an ambassador of German culture.” I felt so proud that I got a lump in my throat which nearly spoiled my first song.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?
I am a cabaret singer, producer and director helping to build bridges between my native and adopted cultures. I lead the European cabaret ensemble, Kabarett Kollektif, and produce New York’s only festival for European cabaret, Kabarett Fete. Last year, my husband Robert and I established the world’s first cabaret scholarship at Long Island University where we fell in love as college students many years ago.
DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
The mountains. The food. The Gemuetlichkeit. The bread. I miss the fact that every ordinary bakery has 10 assortments of sunflower bread alone. And that many kiosks still serve you with porcelain cups and real silverware. I miss the Witz of the Berliners and the Lebenslust of the Bavarians. What I miss most about Frankfurt are the grandparents that are no longer around.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
I fell in love with my native tongue years ago while I was living in Texas and reading books for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. I read a 500-page tome about classical music conductors and realized how lyrical a language it is. Bertholt Brecht really cemented my love for the German language. I love singing in German and using all our delicious consonants to express the range of human emotions. “Liebestraum” is a favorite word. Pfifferling is really fun to say.

Biking along the Hudson River Park, from 76th Street down to Battery Park. My new rides are across the Queensborough Bridge, Queens, Brooklyn and back across the Williamsburg Bridge – phantastic in the evening. Even better is the free ferry from Ikea to Manhattan. Museum browsing and the Goethehaus library are also great.

While I never lived in Germany, my father and three of my grandparents were born there - and I have spent a lot of time visiting my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. I love the small villages and quaint towns, Munich and Cologne, the towns along the Rhine River -- not to mention enjoying the delicious pastries everywhere!

DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY
I love my hometown, Hamburg, and I go back every year for a couple of weeks. Given that in New York you can find literally anything from anywhere, the thing I probably miss the most is public transportation that gets you somewhere on time.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
As a singer, I spend a lot of time working on Lieder, and reading German literature and poetry is a large part of that work. There are too many 'best words' for me to be able to choose a favorite. "Wurst", however, continues to impress me as a phonetic peculiarity--regardless of my partiality for it on a culinary level.

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK?
A lot of my friends were Germans studying or working here in NY. This weekend a bunch of them returns so we will do all the fun stuff NY has to offer: I will visit a couple of great restaurants and bars, go to the Tennement Museum and have a party at my place. Basically I feel like a long term tourist who has to capture everything with my camcorder and put it on my vlog: http://janinasvlog.wordpress.com/
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACITVITY IN NEW YORK?
Being thrown into a unique situation which never would have happened in Germany. That could be a restaurant visit at the Arabic block on Steinway Street or a free concert of my favorite band in a shitty backyard in the
Village. I guess basically it's wandering around and taking pictures of the "jungle" out there.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN NYC?

There are so many great Bavarian words, but I would say "dings bums" is pretty good German

DO YOU MISS SOMETHING ABOUT GERMANY?
Well, I'm an American, but I lived with my family in Germany three different times as a kid when my dad was an American Army officer stationed there in the 60s and 70s. I miss a lot about Germany - the trout fishing we did, fresh bratwurst, and the camraderie of our many German friends acquired over the years. I also miss my sister who lives in Saarbruecken with her German husband and two young sons.
IN YOUR OPINION: WHAT IS THE BEST GERMAN WORD EVER?
Probably "Porsche" because there is no substitute I've always wanted to drive one right out of the factory there!
